Most applications require users to accept its Terms of Service or Terms and Conditions before starting the app. Those statements mainly related to how the developer makes use of your personal data. When you click that “I Agree” button, do you understand thoroughly what you’ve signed up to?

Here are some tips for you to protect your privacy when using mobile apps:

1. Take a look at the Terms of Service or Terms & Conditions before clicking the ‘Accept’ button

2. Make sure the developers will not provide data that identifies you (excluding data required to operate the service) to any third parties unless you expressly approve such or as required by law

3. Check the list of the third parties that will share your personal data required to operate the app
(e.g. service providers will share your information to GPS providers, device manufacturer, social networking sites and advertising agency if the app provides geolocational services, integration with social networking sites and advertising services)

4. Understand potential fees will be charged when using the app (although the app is free, you may be charged for the bandwidth usage if you do not have an unlimited data plan or roaming data plan)

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong also gives you some hints to make good protection of your personal data. According to the ordinance, everyone has the right to know the purpose and manner of personal data collection, as well as the right to update, change and access to his/her data. Also, the data users should try their best to use appropriate security measures to protect the personal data they collected and make sure that they will not use the data for other purposes without consent.

Don’t be afraid of the thousands of words in the Terms of Service, be patient and you will be safely using the service.
