The recent released IDC industry report stated the latest statistic on worldwide mobile phone and mobile OS market share. According to the report, 2013 will be another strong year forecasting 9.7% year over year growth compared the poor growth of 1.2% from last year. Smartphone shipments are predicted to have a great impress run and are forecast to grow 40% year to year than 1 billions units in 2013. This shows that there are still huge demand for smartphones across all over the world, especially in the emerging markets.
The analysts also have some thoughts and forecast the upcoming smartphone market battle for the top OS in the report which is quite interesting and worth looking at. Android is still predicted to be the dominant player for the coming 4 years but slightly losing 7% to 68% market share. iPhone will still be the 2nd guy in the game holding almost one fifth of the market share. Interestingly, Windows Phone is expected to solidify its position as the number three mobile operating system. With the acquisition of Nokia Corporation’s (ADR) devices and services unit, Microsoft Corporation will need to push its share gains by itself as OEM support is expected to shrink now that the company is set to become a full-fledged hardware maker.
